DIY is a provincial-level autonomous regions, one of 26 regional Level in Indonesia. Provincial capital is Yogyakarta, a city rich in the predicate, whether derived from historical and existing potential, such as the city struggles, the city of culture, a university town, and city tourism.

According to the Chronicle Gianti, Yogyakarta or Ngayogyakarta (Javanese) is the name given Pakubuwono II (king of Mataram in 1719-1727) as a replacement Gartitawati pesanggrahan name. Another source said the name derived from the name of Yogyakarta (capital) city of Ayodhya in the Sanskrit epic Ramayana. In everyday usage, commonly pronounced Jogja Yogyakarta (karta) or Ngayogyakarta (Javanese).

The name of the struggle for this city with respect to the role of the constellation of Yogyakarta in Indonesia at the national struggle of the Dutch colonial era, the Japanese colonial era, as well as in the days of struggle to maintain independence.
